Today is the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. Where I live, we’ll enjoy exactly 15 hours, 40 minutes, and 28 seconds of light today.
Most children (and mine in particular) lament the injustice of early bedtime in summer. Who can sleep with the summer sun and sounds streaming in through the window long into the night? Why bother? After a long, dark winter it feels good to celebrate the summer solstice–and stay up late.
Robert Louis Stevenson wrote about this more than a century ago in his wonderful poem “Bed In Summer”:
Hope you enjoy the precious light tonight.
